November 21st, 2017, marked a historic day in Zimbabwe as President Robert Mugabe submitted his resignation to parliament, bringing an end to his 37-year rule.
According to his resignation statement, Mugabe's decision to step down was voluntary and aimed at ensuring a 'smooth, non-violent transfer of power'. The statement read: 'I Robert Gabriel Mugabe hereby formally tender my resignation as President of Zimbabwe with immediate effect.'
Just a day prior, Mugabe had addressed the nation, dismissing the military coup that had placed him under house arrest as a challenge to his authority. However, the Zimbabwean parliament had begun proceedings to impeach him, citing his failure to address corruption, conspiring with his wife to assume power, and accusing his deputies of plotting coups without evidence.
The motion to impeach Mugabe, drafted by Zanu-PF chief whip Lovemore Matuke, stated: 'This attests to the President's poor sense of judgement and disrespect for the law.'
As news of Mugabe's resignation spread, the Zimbabwean parliament erupted in jubilation, with lawmakers and senators celebrating the end of Mugabe's rule. Thousands of Zimbabweans took to the streets outside the parliament buildings, hailing the 'end of a tyrant'.
Reports suggest that Mugabe's resignation was the result of an agreement with the generals, who granted him immunity and allowed him to keep his private properties. The Zimbabwean constitution states that the next in line for the presidency is Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko, but it is likely that former Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa will take over, as the Speaker of the House has promised to ensure a new leader is in place by November 22, 2017.
The United Kingdom has pledged its support for Zimbabwe, with Prime Minister Theresa May stating: 'As Zimbabwe's oldest friend, we will do all we can to support this, working with our international and regional partners to help the country achieve the brighter future it so deserves.'
