On July 27, 2019, a General Service Unit (GSU) police officer stationed at Wilson Airport was detained by a Nairobi court for 14 days over alleged terrorism links.
The officer, Samson Morongo Nesco, was being held pending investigations into alleged terror activities and the murder of his colleague, Constable Stephen Mukangi.
Constable Morongo and his colleague were on duty at Wilson Airport on Saturday night when two men, masquerading as police officers, approached them claiming to be in need of assistance.
According to investigators, the two attackers, dressed in police uniform, asked the officers to help them attend to a vehicle with a mechanical problem along the Southern bypass.
As they walked towards the scene, two other men, also dressed in police attire, emerged from a nearby bush, triggering a shootout that left Constable Mukangi dead.
Constable Morongo claimed that the four attackers were terrorists and that they took away their two AK47 rifles loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition each.
He further stated that he managed to escape with a gunshot wound to the leg but that his colleague was killed by the attackers.
The investigators told Milimani Court Magistrate Muthoni Nzibe that the case is complicated and that they need more time to investigate and determine the truth.
The matter will be mentioned on August 12, 2019.
