On July 30, 2019, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and his wife Susan Wangari Ndung'u found themselves in a precarious situation after failing to post bail on time.
Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi had earlier granted Waititu Ksh 15 million cash bail or a bond of Ksh 30 million in a case involving Ksh 588 million in illegal road tenders.
However, the couple was unable to meet the bail conditions, and as a result, they were ordered to spend the night in remand at the Industrial Area Remand and Langata Women's Prison.
Waititu's wife, Susan Wangari, along with County Chief Officer for Roads Lukas Wahinya, five members of the Kiambu County Tender Evaluation Committee, and two directors of Testimony Enterprises Limited, were also ordered to pay cash bails ranging from Ksh 1 million to Ksh 4 million.
Furthermore, Waititu was barred from accessing the County offices pending the hearing and determination of the criminal case against him.
Additionally, the court ordered Waititu and nine other suspects to surrender their passports and travel documents.
Waititu and his wife had spent the last two days behind bars after surrendering to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Sunday.
