On July 30, 2019, Kenya announced it would delay a decision on Emirates Airlines' request for a third daily flight to Nairobi until the nationalisation plan for Kenya Airways is completed.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Macharia Kamau stated that the decision was made to ensure future air agreements with other countries consider the position of the national carrier.
Kenya Airways is currently undergoing restructuring, as recommended by the National Assembly, which has proposed a nationalisation plan modelled on successful carriers like Ethiopian Airlines.
The proposed plan involves putting Kenya Airways under a holding company, and the decision on Emirates Airlines' third daily flight will be made later, according to Kamau.
Emirates Airlines currently operates two daily flights to Nairobi, and another Emirati airline has also applied to start flying to the city.
