On July 30, 2019, Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu and his wife Susan Ndung'u found themselves in a precarious situation after failing to post bail on time.

As a result, Mr. Waititu will spend the night at Industrial Area Remand Prison, while his wife will brave the cold night at the Lang'ata Women's Prison.

The couple had been released on bail earlier, with Mr. Waititu being granted a Sh15 million cash bail and his wife a Sh4 million cash bail.

However, they failed to process the bail by the close of business on the day, leading to their re-arrest.

Furthermore, Governor Waititu has been barred from accessing his office until the case is heard and determined.

Anti-corruption court Judge Lawrence Mugambi ruled that this measure is necessary to ensure the integrity of the trial and protect public interest.

The governor has been charged with irregularly procuring a Sh588 million tender for upgrading various gravel roads to bitumen standard.

According to the Director of Public Prosecutions, part of the funds were used by Saika Two Estate Developers Limited to purchase Bieneveu Delta Hotel Limited, which is owned by Waititu and his wife.

The roads project covered Thika, Limuru, Gatundu North, Juja, and Ruiru sub-counties, and was allegedly skewed in favor of the winning bidder with the assistance of county officials.
