On World Ranger Day, we recognize the often unsung heroes of conservation efforts. Rangers are the frontline workers who risk their lives to protect endangered species and their habitats.

According to the International Federation of Rangers, over 100 rangers die in the line of duty every year. This is a stark reminder of the risks they take to keep wildlife safe from poachers.

Just last year, six rangers and a driver were gunned down in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This was the worst attack in the park's history, where 170 rangers have been killed in the past two decades.

Despite these risks, rangers continue to play a crucial role in conservation efforts. They work tirelessly to protect endangered species, including the mountain gorillas of Virunga National Park.

As East Africa steps up efforts to curb poaching and restore endangered wildlife populations, the work of rangers will be more important than ever. They need proper training, equipment, fair wages, and psychological support to carry out their duties effectively.

On World Ranger Day, we honor the dedication and bravery of these conservation heroes. Their work is essential to protecting our planet's wild treasures and preserving biodiversity for future generations.
