On July 30, 2019, Kiambu Deputy Governor James Nyoro declared himself the interim governor of Kiambu County, effective immediately.

The move comes after a court ruling barred Governor Ferdinand Waititu from accessing his office due to graft allegations amounting to Ksh. 585 Million.

Waititu and his wife, along with other county officers, were arraigned in court on Monday and charged with corruption.

Justice Mumbi Ngungi had previously ruled that any governor implicated in a corruption scandal should resign.

Nyoro held his first cabinet meeting, promising to serve the residents of Kiambu with diligence.

However, his announcement was met with skepticism by a number of MCAs and Kiambu CECs.

The power struggle between Nyoro and Waititu has been ongoing since the elections, with Nyoro accusing Waititu of sidelining him in county decisions.
