On July 30, 2019, a disturbing incident unfolded in Mkwajuni village, Kilifi town, where a Pwani University student, Naomi Chepkemoi, was brutally stabbed by her estranged boyfriend.
Chepkemoi, a third-year Public Health student, was attacked multiple times in the neck, breast, and back, leaving her in a pool of blood.
According to eyewitnesses, Chepkemoi's neighbors and fellow students intervened, persuading the attacker to open the door after he had locked himself in the house with her for over four hours.
Kilifi North OCPD Njoroge Ngigi confirmed that the attacker is in custody and will be arraigned this week.
Speaking at the hospital, Eugine Ochieng', a classmate and neighbor of Chepkemoi, recounted the events leading up to the attack.
"The man came at 6am. At first, Naomi had refused to open the door, and we don't know how he convinced her to open. After a while, I received the text from her, which said: 'Come and open the door for me please'. I went and tried to open but I could not. That is when I alerted others who came," Ochieng' said.
It is alleged that the attacker had traveled from Nairobi to demand why Chepkemoi had returned Sh3,200 he had sent her last week for the upkeep of their child.
Kilifi County Police Commander Patrick Okeri stated that the attacker had been denied access to their child in Bomet, leading him to travel to Mombasa to follow up on the issue with Chepkemoi.
