Fast forward to 2019, Nairobi County government public health officials have been investigating the sale of toxic meat in the city's supermarkets and meat outlets.
According to Nairobi County Deputy Director of Public Health Kenneth Mando, 40 samples of meat were taken from various outlets, and five tested positive for preservatives beyond the allowed limit of 500 milligrams per kilogram.
The five outlets found guilty of selling toxic meat are Naivas Supermarket Gateway Mall, Naivas Supermarket Rabai road Buruburu, Tuskys Kenyatta Avenue, Tuskys Eastlands, and Muthaiga Fine meat Limited.
Health Committee Chairman of the Nairobi County Assembly, Peter Warutere, has called for the immediate closure of these outlets, stating that they are 'killing us slowly'.
The six outlets are accused of contravening section 4 and 36 (1) of the Food, Drugs and Chemical Substances Cap 254 as contained in Statute Law Act No. 2 of 2002.
