On July 30, 2019, police in Rabai Sub-County, Kilifi County, made a significant seizure of ivory worth Ksh18 million. The 35 kilograms of ivory, valued at Ksh18 million, was confiscated during a raid in Makombeni village.
Two suspects, John Chisiwa Ngoma and Mwauchi Mgaza, were arrested in connection with the seized ivory. They are currently in lawful custody and will be arraigned in court on Wednesday.
According to Rabai Sub-County Police Commander David Maina, the ivory was believed to have been poached from elephants in Tsavo National Park or neighboring ranches in Taita Taveta. The tusks were hidden in sacks and buried underground, awaiting transportation.
Police are still pursuing two other suspects who managed to escape during the crackdown. The operation was carried out on Tuesday morning, and the police are working to bring the remaining suspects to justice.
