On July 29, 2019, Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso passed away at Nairobi Hospital after a long battle with cancer. The late governor had been in hospitals in London and India for treatment in the past two months.

According to her family, Laboso will be buried at her home in Fort Ternan, Koru, Kisumu County, in accordance with both Luo and Kipsigis culture, which prohibits a married woman from being buried where she was born but instead at her matrimonial home.

Her husband Edwin Abonyo announced that the funeral service will be conducted in Bomet, but the burial will take place in Kisumu. The family has not yet released the burial date.

Laboso, who served as the Sotik MP and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, leaves behind a husband and three children. She was elected as Bomet Governor after the death of her sister Lorna Laboso in a plane crash on June 10, 2008.
