On July 30, 2019, the government suspended SportPesa's online payment services, citing non-compliance with industry rules. The move left many Kenyans unable to deposit or withdraw funds from their betting wallets.
SportPesa has maintained that it is tax compliant and has been working to resolve the issue. The matter is currently pending before the courts.
Despite the suspension, SportPesa claims to be operational and has assured customers that they can still play and withdraw their money as usual. However, punters are unable to deposit money into their suspended paybill number.
As the standoff continues, SportPesa has been providing updates to its clients, including a list of its social responsibility initiatives. However, comments from punters on social media suggest that they are more interested in hearing about the company's plans to resume operations.
Responding to customer queries, SportPesa stated that its services are temporarily unavailable due to a suspension of services by key suppliers and that it is working tirelessly to resume full operations.
"Hello, worry not, rest assured we are working tirelessly to restore normal operations very soon. We thank you for your patience and support. ^SR" the company responded.
