On July 29, 2019, Tanzanian journalist Erick Kabendera was taken away from his home in a Dar es Salaam suburb by individuals claiming to be police officers.

According to a relative, at least six men in a Toyota Alphard sedan forcefully whisked Kabendera away without showing any identity cards, and also took both Kabendera and his wife's mobile phones.

Kabendera's wife, Loy, confirmed the incident, stating that her husband was arrested in broad daylight, in front of curious neighbors who were not allowed to take photos.

At the time of publishing, Kabendera was still being questioned at Oysterbay Police Station in the city centre.

When contacted for comment, Dar es Salaam's top police commander Lazaro Mambosasa stated that he had not been notified of the arrest, but promised to make a follow-up.
