On July 27, 2019, a heinous crime shook the quiet village of Embali in Emuhaya sub-county, Vihiga. Joseph Omwenga, a 28-year-old man, allegedly raped and murdered a 71-year-old grandmother, Beatrice Maua Osea.
According to Corporal Pascaline Syombua's sworn affidavit, the matter was reported by area assistant chief Joyce Amahema on July 28 at 10pm. The body was recovered with visible signs of rape and strangulation, with blood oozing from the victim's genitalia.
Following preliminary investigations, Omwenga was arrested and his blood samples were forwarded to the Government Chemist in Kisumu for DNA analysis. The suspect was denied bail and ordered to undergo a mandatory psychiatric test.
Kakamega Senior Principal Magistrate Hazel Wandere allowed the application for detention, citing the serious nature of the offence. The suspect was ordered to be held at Luanda Police Station awaiting the mention on August 13.
