Published on July 30, 2019, a struggle is simmering over the burial site of the late governor Joyce Laboso, with both Kalenjin and Luo communities vying for her burial rights.
Laboso, who was married to Dr. Edwin Abonyo, a man from the Luo community, had roots in Kisumu and hailed from Koru. The couple had three sons together.
However, when Laboso ventured into active politics, she was forced to drop her husband's name and revert back to Laboso, as her marital status to a man from the Luo community was seen as ammunition for her detractors to degrade her political journey.
The question now is where she will be buried, given that she stayed in Sotik until her death, which was a residential home of her late sister Lorna Laboso.
Laboso was elected to Parliament to represent the Sotik constituency in a by-election after the death of her sister, Lorna Laboso, who died in a plane crash.
The Luo community has insisted on burying the late Laboso, while the Kalenjin community is lobbying to bury her in what is seen as a political game plan.
