On July 29, 2019, Tanzanian journalist Erick Kabendera was detained at his home in a Dar es Salaam suburb by individuals claiming to be police officers.
According to a relative, Kabendera was forcefully whisked away by at least six men in a Toyota Alphard sedan, with the men not showing any identity cards and taking both Kabendera and his wife's mobile phones.
His wife, Loy, confirmed the incident, stating that her husband was arrested in broad daylight, in front of curious neighbours who were not allowed to take photos.
When contacted for comment, Dar es Salaam's top police commander Lazaro Mambosasa said he had not been notified of the detention, but promised to make a follow-up.
