On July 29, 2019, Kenya lost a trailblazing leader in Bomet Governor Dr. Joyce Laboso, who passed away at the age of 58 at Nairobi Hospital.

Dr. Laboso had been undergoing treatment for cancer, first in India and later at Nairobi Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she was admitted for two weeks.

Earlier, Bomet County Director of Communications Ezra Kirui had assured residents that the Governor was recuperating well and under observation, citing a statement that read, 'The office of the Governor would like to assure residents of Bomet and the general public that Governor Laboso is recuperating well and still under observation.'

However, despite the initial optimism, Dr. Laboso's condition took a turn for the worse, and she was eventually surrounded by her loved ones as she passed away.

President Uhuru Kenyatta eulogized Dr. Laboso as an icon of women leadership in Kenya, saying, 'I have received the sad news of the passing away of Bomet Governor Dr. Joyce Laboso with utter disbelief. Dr. Laboso was an icon of women leadership in our country. May God grant the family, residents of Bomet and all Kenyans the fortitude to bear the big loss.'

Dr. Laboso's death comes in the wake of the demise of Kibra MP Ken Okoth, who passed away just days earlier from Colorectal Cancer.
