On July 29, 2019, ODM Leader Raila Odinga made a public statement regarding the infamous fake gold scandal, which had been making headlines in Kenya.

Speaking in Kisii during the burial of Dr David Ombati, Raila revealed that he had been the one to blow the whistle on the fake gold syndicate, after discovering that some individuals were using senior government officials' names to con businessmen.

According to Raila, he had informed the businessmen that whoever they were told would clear their gold was not Matiang'i, after being handed over a phone with a voice claiming to be the CS. However, Raila identified the voice as being of a different person altogether.

While clearing Matiang'i's name, Raila described the CS as 'as white as cotton' and warned those faking video clips or voices to be ready to face the law.

He also revealed that the gold was to leave the country through Wajir Airport after getting clearance from the fake Matiang'i, and expressed his confidence in the CS, who had previously worked in his office while he was the country's Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013.
