Confessions: My husband's jealousy is suffocating my career

My husband took me in after I finished my Form Four exams and has been paying my college fees. I've attended several interviews, but he won't let me work, claiming it's because I'm his wife and he can't trust me in a place with many men.

His behavior is suffocating my career and making me feel like I'm not capable of making good decisions. I'm tired of staying idle at home and want to know how I can convince him to let me work.

According to readers, my husband's jealousy is rooted in insecurity, and I should try to reassure him that I'm responsible and can make good judgments. They suggest that I celebrate his efforts and progress, and make him feel good about himself.

However, relationship counsellor Hilda Boke Mahare advises that I see a therapist to help my husband overcome his insecurities. She also suggests that I affirm him and celebrate his efforts, as this may be what he lacked while growing up.

Another reader, Simon Anyona, suggests that I talk to my husband's closest friend about his insecurities, as he may be more likely to listen to him. He also advises that I pursue my career if he proves stubborn.
