July 29, 2019 - A brewing storm is unfolding at Jamii Co-operative Savings and Credit Society, with a faction of the board of directors demanding an internal audit of their own operations and those of senior managers.

The move comes as a result of concerns over the recent activities of national treasurer Ambrose Ogango, which have been deemed suspicious by a source within the board.

The board, which includes chairperson Anne Abwere, vice chairman Wilberforce Chebet, chief executive officer Eliud Chepkwony, national secretary Harrison Katoni, and directors James Keretai, Jonathan Mengich, Elijah Letangule, Phanice Etemere, and Japson Gitonga, is also facing scrutiny over the acquisition of 19.2 acres of land next to Eldoret University.

The land deal, which was highly inflated, has raised eyebrows, particularly given that it was acquired by Kalenjin faces running the Sacco, despite falling under a housing cooperative. It is alleged that members of the board influenced relatives to purchase the land as non-members, at the expense of some members of the board.

Additionally, the tender for the information system, which was worth millions of shillings, has become a point of contention. The tender, which was captioned JSCS/3/Nov/2018, was marred by allegations of favoritism, with each powerful member on the board and management pushing for their preferred firm to land the lucrative contract.
