On July 29, 2019, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and his wife Susan were expected to face corruption charges over a Sh580 million irregular tender at the Milimani Law Courts.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) had issued an appeal to Waititu and his wife to surrender for processing ahead of their court appearance.
However, the couple was not found at their known residences at the time of the planned arrests, according to EACC Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak.
Three suspects had already been arrested, including the director of M/S Testimony Enterprises Limited, Charles Mbuthis Chege, and Tender Evaluation Committee members Joyce Ngina Musyoka and Simon Kabocho Kangethe.
The search for Waititu was launched on Friday night after the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji directed the EACC to arrest and charge him and others over a Sh588,198,328 scandal at the county.
According to Haji, there was sufficient evidence to charge the couple, whose company Saika Two Estate Developers Limited received Sh25,624,500 from Testimony enterprises Limited contractor.
"Once the funds were paid by Kiambu County Government, a total of Sh25,624,500 was remitted to entities associated with Waititu," EACC said in its investigation file sent to the DPP for approval of charges.
Others facing charges include five tender committee members at the county, a Chief Officer in charge of roads at the county, and two directors of the company that was awarded the tender.
