Published on July 29, 2019, a city resident, Hillary Otieno, shared his observations on the dating scene in Nairobi, where women often expect men to shoulder their financial burdens.

According to Otieno, it's common to meet a woman in Nairobi who expects a man to pay for her expenses, such as gas, rent, and electricity tokens, almost immediately after meeting.

He recalled an instance where a woman asked him to refill her gas on the same day they met, and the next day, she requested him to pay her rent.

Otieno wondered what had become of women, who seemed to prioritize men with fat wallets over other qualities.

He noted that city men have adapted to this trend by employing legal tender to win women's affection.

Money, it seems, is the ultimate tonic for the heart, and many men spend fortunes to woo women, even if it's just for one night.

Take, for instance, Jim, who was besotted by the neighbourhood heartthrob, Muthoni, aka Kendi.

He lavished her with expensive gifts, dinners, and beauty treatments, which eventually won her over.

However, not all women are impressed by money. Beth, an electrician, said she would never consider a long-term relationship with a man who flaunts his wealth.

She believed that men with money never flaunt it because they know they have it, and that broke men who spend money they don't have are shallow and often dumped by clever women.

Mark, a computer salesman, also shared his experience of using money to seduce women, but with setbacks.

He once showered money on a beautician, but was embarrassed when the night guard denied him entry to his 'home'.

He also recalled an instance where he spent his rent impressing a woman, but was shocked to find her drinking cheap beer in a dingy bar a week later.
