Healthy Eyes for Summer Reading

Before diving into a summer reading list, ensure your eyes are healthy. Dr. Brodie advises getting your eyes checked, especially if you're over 40 or experience blurry text. If you find yourself holding books farther away, it may be a sign that your eyes need attention. He recommends picking up a cheap pair of reading glasses at the pharmacy, which are 'actually quite well made.'

For stronger prescriptions, check out our guide to the best places to buy glasses online. Don't forget to bring cheap sunglasses to the beach, and consider taking reading breaks every hour to rest your eyes.

Make Reading a Habit

Developing concentration is crucial, especially when on vacation. Maryanne Wolf, author of 'Reader Come Home,' notes that skimming screens has become the norm, affecting focus. She recommends reading for 20 minutes daily and avoiding screens in the morning and before bed.

Limit screen time for kids under 5 and allow it in moderation for those 5 and up. Dr. Wolf emphasizes that banning screens completely is unnecessary, as kids will only crave technology more. To nurture better reading habits, keep it consistent and fun.

Tap into Your Local Library

Libraries remain the best resource for reading. Many offer summer reading programs for kids and adults, along with activities like games, performers, and author visits. Your library card likely grants access to Libby, an app for checking out free e-books and audiobooks. Talk to a librarian for personalized recommendations on what to read.

Lynn Lobash, associate director of Reader Services at The New York Public Library, suggests using the library's website to place holds for pickup or download. Even if you're not a member, you can still take advantage of The New York Public Library's list of resources, including personalized recommendations.
