On July 28, 2019, a devastating shooting occurred at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California, leaving one person dead and multiple others wounded.
A witness, Julissa Contreras, described the scene to NBC, stating that a white man in his 30s, armed with a rifle, opened fire indiscriminately.
"I could see him shooting in just every direction. He wasn't aiming at anyone specifically. It was just left to right, right to left," Contreras said.
The San Francisco division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene, and the local police department expressed their condolences to the victims.
Senator Kamala Harris, a 2020 Democratic presidential nominee, also expressed her support for the first responders and those injured in the shooting.
Shootings are a frequent occurrence in the United States, and despite efforts to address the issue legislatively, progress has been largely stalled at the federal level.
