On July 28, 2019, Chirau Ali Mwakwere was elected as the new chairman of the Wiper Party, succeeding Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana who had resigned in January.
The election took place at a retreat of the Wiper Party's National Executive Council held at the Kenya School of Law in Karen, Nairobi.
Chirau Ali Mwakwere, a former Cabinet minister, joined the Wiper Party in 2017 after leaving the Jubilee Party.
According to the party, the election of the chairman and vice-chair will be ratified at a National Delegates Conference whose date will be announced later.
Former Governor Kibwana cited 'issues within the party' as the reason for his decision to quit as Wiper Chair, stating that there had been issues between him and the party leader, and that he had informed the people of Makueni and they had agreed that it was fine for him to step down.
