On July 28, 2019, Tanzania's Taifa Stars faced Kenya in the African Nations Champions (CHAN) qualifier, missing key players who had participated in the African Cup of Nations.

Head coach Ettiene Ndayigajire released his starting team, excluding injured Azam duo Mudathir Yahya and David Mwantika, and Simba SC's Aishi Manula.

Manula, the first-choice goalkeeper, was replaced by veteran Juma Kaseja, while Jonas Mkude filled Yahya's midfield void.

Centre back Mwantika, who had a good season with Simba and played in all Tanzania's AFCON matches, was replaced by versatile Erasto Nyoni.

John Raphael Bocco, the captain, led the goal-hunt mission alongside Ayub Lyanga in the match.

The return match was set for Sunday, August 4 in Nairobi.
