On Saturday night, a police officer was tragically shot dead and another seriously injured in an ambush near Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

The two officers, Constable Stephen Mukangi and Constable Samson Morongo, attached to the General Service Unit (GSU), were on duty at the airport when they were approached by two men claiming to be in need of assistance.

However, the two men, who were dressed in full jungle uniform, turned out to be attackers and asked the GSU officers to help them with a vehicle that had a mechanical problem along the Southern bypass.

As the officers walked towards the alleged scene, two other men emerged from a nearby bush, triggering a shootout that left Constable Mukangi dead.

According to police, a commotion ensued and the four men overpowered the officers, fatally shooting Constable Mukangi and shooting Constable Morongo in the leg as he escaped.

The suspects escaped with two AK 47 rifles loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition each belonging to the two GSU officers.

The body of the deceased officer was moved to the Kenyatta University mortuary as a hunt for the suspects continues.
