On September 27, 2018, Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabbir appeared before Resident Magistrate Pauline Mbulika in a bid to secure custody and parental responsibility of his two-and-a-half-year-old child.
However, the MP's baby mama was not having it, instead seeking the court to dismiss the suit and award her Sh240,000 monthly upkeep for the child.
Shabbir, who is of Indian descent, has previously made sensational claims, including that some members of the Asian community want to kill him because he married a Luhya woman.
He also claimed that most Indian girls are sexually frustrated because their parents lock them in the houses and don’t want them to mingle with young men from other parts of Kenya.
Shabbir's lawyer, Mitchel Menezes, asked the court to grant the MP access to the child during weekends and public holidays pending the hearing and determination of the case.
The court heard that the two parties had disagreed on access to the child, with the MP providing upkeep but rarely visiting the child.
The baby mama fired back, accusing Shabbir of being inconsistent with upkeep payments and seeking Sh240,000 as monthly upkeep, which includes Sh50,000 for rent, Sh18,000 for recreational activities, and Sh40,000 school fees.
