This archive report was first published on 28 July 2019.

On a visit to DR Congo last year, Deputy President William Ruto negotiated a Sh 716 million land deal for Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi, leasing a 100-hectare piece of land at Mpala Katiaba, Mpala Province, for five years.

According to a lease contract obtained by our investigations team, the land was leased from December 2018 to December 2023, with Sudi allowed to cultivate maize during the period.

The deal has sparked allegations of corruption and underhand deals, with many believing that Sudi and his associates plan to import maize from the farms leased abroad into the country and trade with the government.

Separately, the government has revived the forgery case against Sudi, where his academic certificates have been put on scrutiny by the government.

Our investigations team has obtained a copy of the lease contract, which was signed in December 2018, and has been published below.

"The lease entered this day of December 2018 to December 2023, and the tenant shall surrender possession at the end of the term or at the end of any extension thereof. Extensions must be placed in writing on this lease and both parties agree that failure to execute an extension at least 18 months before the end of the current term shall be constructive notice of an intent to allow the lease to expire," reads part of the document.

Our investigations team has obtained a copy of the lease document, which has been published below.
