On Saturday, July 27, 2019, Strathmore Gladiators secured a thrilling 3-0 win against United States International University in the men's hockey Premier League varsity derby at City Park Stadium.
However, the real story of the day was Butali Sugar Warriors, who solidified their position at the top of the standings by edging out Western Jaguars 1-0 at Eregi Teachers Training College (ETTC) Ground in Kakamega.
Strathmore Gladiators' skipper Festus Onyango was instrumental in their victory, scoring a double in the 23rd and 48th minutes, while Edgar Makete added another goal in the 32nd minute.
Butali Sugar Warriors' victory was largely due to Roving forward George Mutira's goal in the 22nd minute, which silenced Western Jaguars and upheld their unbeaten run, stretching their lead to 18 points.
Butali Sugar Warriors' coach Dennis Owoko expressed his delight at the team's performance, stating, 'We take every match as a final, something that has contributed to our performance.'
Western Jaguars' tactician Mike Malungu, who is also the National Under 21 coach, rued many missed scoring opportunities, saying, 'We dominated the better part of the first half and it's unfortunate that we ended up losing.'
