Published on July 27, 2019, the Coast Open, also known as the Barry Cup, marked its 100th year at the Mombasa Golf Club.
Taimur Malik, a youngster from Muthaiga, and George Munyao of Nyali Golf and Country Club took the lead halfway through the opening round with a two-under-par 72 each.
Munyao recovered from a double-bogey start at the first hole and three single bogeys at the fifth, sixth, and seventh to post a low three-under-par back nine, including birdies on the 14th, 16th, and 17th.
Malik, formerly of Windsor, double-bogeyed the third hole but recovered one shot at the fourth to level the score after picking up a birdie at the 10th and joining Munyao at the top of the leaderboard.
Kenya Amateur Match play champion Paul Muchangi of Limuru followed closely with a two-over-par 73, birdying the first and 16th holes but dropping shots on the third, seventh, and ninth.
"The course is fine save for the strong wind that one has to know to tackle it. I am happy though with my first round score," said Muchangi, who tied for third place with club-mate Francis Kimani, a past winner of the event.
