Published on July 27, 2019, Tecno smartphone users have been experiencing a persistent issue with a pop-up error that says 'OTG connected, Go To Settings to turn OTG on' when no USB device is connected to their phones.
While the root cause of this bug remains unclear, a Tecno Spot member has seemingly found an unofficial cause and solution to the problem.
According to the member, the issue is often caused by moisture accumulation in the charging port, which can be due to the port getting wet or exposure to humidity over time.
Users are advised to visit a Tecno Service Center (Carlcare) for a professional fix, but those who prefer to do it themselves can follow the steps below:
- Obtain methylated spirit, which can be found at local kinyozi shops. Ensure to get the undiluted version.
- Use a cotton earbud to gently blow out any dust accumulated in the charging port.
- Dip the cotton earbud in methylated spirit and apply it to the charging port. Scrub gently through the inside several times and let the phone dry out in the sun for about 10 minutes.
Allegedly, the methylated spirit helps evaporate any moisture trapped within the charging port, thereby fixing the OTG Connected issue. It also serves as a rust cleaner, in case the device's charging port is rusty.
As noted, the above process worked for the original poster and several others who went this route, but users are warned not to come for the author's neck in case it doesn't work for them.
