Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi has publicly distanced herself from Deputy President William Ruto, signaling a strategic shift in Western Region politics by aligning with Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi. The move comes as Elachi, once a key Ruto ally, urged regional leaders to prioritize Mudavadi's presidential campaign over continued support for Ruto's 2022 ambitions.
Speaking during the funeral of Lugari MP Ayub Savula's daughter in Manyonyi village, Elachi emphasized the need for the Luhya community to focus on internal development. "2019 is a year of reflection and strategic planning to ensure our people benefit from resource-sharing agreements," she stated. Her remarks marked a departure from her previous role as a vocal Ruto supporter, including her 2015 advocacy for the deputy president during a parliamentary press conference.
Elachi's decision follows a period of political reevaluation after her controversial removal as Nairobi County Assembly speaker in 2018. Despite ongoing legal challenges, she has avoided public efforts to reclaim her position, instead redirecting her focus to regional political dynamics. "Leaders should stop frequenting Sugoi and instead work with Mudavadi to enhance our chances of producing a president," she said, referencing Ruto's political stronghold.
Political analysts noted the significance of Elachi's shift, particularly after Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa also distanced from Ruto. ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya echoed her calls, criticizing absentee legislators for neglecting local priorities. "Last year's KCSE results showed Kakamega's poor performance, yet leaders prioritize Sugoi over addressing education challenges," Oparanya said, citing the region's underwhelming academic outcomes.
The development highlights growing tensions within Western Region politics as 2022 presidential elections approach, with factions increasingly aligning behind competing candidates amid shifting alliances.
