On July 26, 2019, Raila Odinga, the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development, emphasized the need for countries in the East and Central African region to reduce the number of roadblocks and weighbridges on roads to facilitate the movement of goods and services.

Speaking at the 31st meeting of the Council of Ministers during the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA) executive meeting in Mombasa, Raila called for practical action to address paperwork plans and ease regional trade.

“Why should a truck from Kigali to Mombasa and vice-versa be forced to go through over 55 barriers on the way, some spending close to Sh100,000 as handouts?” Odinga asked.

He noted that tariff barriers at border points have hindered the realization of free trade within regional countries, and urged regional transport ministers to address the issue.

“Inter-Africa trade stands at 15 percent, far too small compared to Southern America that stands at 25 percent. We need to stop talking and swing into action and practically make things happen,” Odinga said.

He also emphasized the importance of investing in peace, security, and political stability to facilitate regionalism.

Ugandan Minister for Transport Katumba Wamala echoed Raila's sentiments, stating that Uganda relies heavily on Kenya's Mombasa port for imports and exports, and that the eradication of road barriers along the Northern Corridor would boost the economy.
