On July 26, 2019, US President Donald Trump expressed his concerns to French President Emmanuel Macron about France's proposed digital services tax. Trump warned that the US would retaliate if France proceeded with the tax.

Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump stated, 'If anybody taxes them, it should be their home Country, the USA. We will announce a substantial reciprocal action on Macron's foolishness shortly.'

Trump also claimed that American wine is better than French wine, saying, 'I've always said American wine is better than French wine!'

When asked about the potential US response, Trump hinted that it could involve taxing French wines, saying, 'It might be on wine, it might be on something else.'

France's proposed digital services tax aims to target big US technology companies, including Google, Amazon, and Facebook.
