Real Madrid's pre-season preparations took a disastrous turn as they suffered their worst defeat in recent years, losing 7-3 to Atletico Madrid at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 26, 2019.
The two La Liga rivals clashed in the International Champions Cup, a pre-season tournament meant to gauge their teams' strength, but the match was anything but friendly.
Diego Costa was the star of the show, scoring four goals past Zinedine Zidane's men, including one from the penalty spot, and was even sent off in the 65th minute after a scuffle with Dani Carvajal.
Costa's first goal came just 44 seconds into the match, and he went on to score two more before being given his marching orders.
Joao Felix, Atletico's latest acquisition, also impressed, scoring twice and providing an assist for Costa's fourth goal.
Angel Correa and Vitolo also scored for Atletico, while Nacho and Karim Benzema scored for Real Madrid, and Javi Hernandez headed home Los Blancos' third goal.
The match ended in chaos, with both Carvajal and Costa being sent off after a huge 22-man scuffle.
