On July 26, 2019, the Kenyan authorities announced plans to include an intersex category in the upcoming census, alongside 'male' and 'female', in the section on gender.

This decision comes as part of efforts to gather data on the number of intersex people in the country, with the United Nations estimating that up to 1.7% of the world's population have intersex traits.

According to the statistics bureau, the intersex category will be included in the census form next month, with the census itself expected to take place at the end of the month.

The Kenyan government has also set up a special task force to look into the interests of intersex persons and identify reforms required to respect and protect their rights as Kenyans.
