On July 26, 2019, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) urged the government to support the quarry sub-sector, highlighting its potential for growth and contribution to the country's GDP.

The sector representative for the lower eastern region, Jeremiah Nzioki, emphasized the importance of government backing to enable quarry businesses to achieve their full potential. He noted that the 'Big Four' agenda, particularly in the building and construction sector, presents opportunities for the sub-sector, with expected increases in ballast orders in the future.

The lower eastern region, comprising Machakos, Kitui, and Kajiado counties, has been a significant provider of materials for infrastructural projects, including the SGR project from Mtito Andei to Syokimau. Nzioki cited the subsector's collaboration with KEBS to ensure the quality of stones and ballast meets construction standards.

The quarry sub-sector contributes to the GDP by sourcing machinery locally from Komatsu and Caterpillar, providing easy access to spare parts. It also offers direct employment to mechanics, excavator drivers, and indirect employment to thousands of trucks visiting the areas daily. Furthermore, the sub-sector engages in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects, such as road rehabilitation, borehole drilling, and medical camps.

However, Nzioki highlighted challenges hindering business growth, including poor security, as most workers live far from the quarries, limiting productivity. The poor road network in the quarry areas has led to high operational costs due to wear and tear, while poor roads limit accessibility by customers.

Additionally, there has been encroachment of quarry areas in recent years. Nzioki urged county governments to ensure zoning rules are followed and to impose dumping bans around quarries.
