Kenya is facing a severe food shortage, with drought affecting maize production in parts of the country.
As a result, the Kenyan government has been under pressure to import maize to meet the demand, but Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri has been accused of creating an artificial shortage to justify imports.
However, Tanzania has come to the rescue, agreeing to supply Kenya with one million tons of maize and flour over the course of a year.
According to Hussein Bashe, Tanzania's deputy minister of agriculture, officials from the two countries will meet next week to discuss the details of the deal.
The first consignment of 20,000 tons is expected to be sold next month, with prices yet to be made public.
The agreement follows a meeting between Tanzanian President John Magufuli and his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta in Dar es Salaam this month.
