On July 26, 2019, Tanzania announced plans to sell neighboring Kenya one million tons of maize and flour over the course of a year to address a severe food shortage.
According to Hussein Bashe, Tanzania's deputy minister of agriculture, the agreement was reached to supply Kenya with one million tons of maize flour and grains to help end the prevailing food shortage.
Bashe stated, 'We have generally agreed to supply them with one million tons of maize flour and grains throughout a year to help them end the prevailing food shortage.'
Officials from Tanzania and Kenya will meet next week to discuss the details of the deal, which will be overseen by the cereals board of Tanzania.
The first shipment of approximately 20,000 tons is expected to be delivered next month, with prices having been agreed upon but not yet made public.
The agreement follows a meeting between Tanzanian President John Magufuli and his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta in Dar es Salaam earlier this month.
