On July 15, 2019, Esther Wambui, a cancer patient, succumbed to her illness after being denied treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in April 2019.

Wambui's plight was highlighted in a viral video clip that showed her and her sister, Gladys Mwihaki, being turned away by the referral hospital for failing to pay a Sh1,950 bill.

According to award-winning investigative journalist John-Allan Namu, Wambui's family had tried to raise money to pay for her treatment, but unfortunately, she passed away.

Wambui's sister, Gladys Mwihaki, had earlier spoken out about the family's struggles to afford cancer treatment, saying that her earnings from doing laundry were barely enough to feed her children.

Despite the challenges, well-wishers intervened, and Wambui was eventually admitted to KNH after waiting for two days.

However, it was too late, and Wambui left behind a huge hospital bill of Sh200,000.
