Published on July 26, 2019, a report by the Auditor General Edward Ouko revealed that the Ministry of Education had transferred Sh1.5 billion to the National Land Commission for the acquisition of a piece of land from businessman Francis Mburu.
The land, located at Drive Inn, along Thika Road, was already public land, and the National Land Commission misled the Ministry of Education to undertake a compulsory acquisition, leading to the loss of public funds.
According to the report, the Ministry of Education transferred Sh1,500,000,000 to the National Land Commission on January 22, 2018, for the purpose of the acquisition, and the same was paid to the vendor on January 29, 2018.
Interior CS Fred Matiang'i and Education PS Belio Kipsang have been adversely mentioned as having authorized the illegal transaction at the advise of the National Land Commission, which was led by Mohammed Swazuri at that time.
“The courts have ruled on the real owners of the land. We now have the green light to proceed. It is only a matter of days before you see the next action,” said the DPP, hinting at the impending prosecution of the suspects.
The DPP's revelation has sparked tension in President Uhuru's cabinet, with pundits believing that corruption-related charges against prominent Cabinet Secretaries and top state officials present President Uhuru Kenyatta with the right opportunity to overhaul his entire government.
