President Uhuru Kenyatta has declared that the government has no more money to allocate to counties, despite demands from governors and senators for an increase in the Sh316 billion allocated to them.
Speaking during a funeral in Murang'a on July 25, 2019, Uhuru said: “There are no funds to support the additional Sh19 billion that the governors want.”
He added that the government does not print money and must work with what it has, urging governors to work with the allocated funds.
The National Assembly had passed a Bill allocating counties Sh316 billion as their equitable share, while the Senate had approved a parallel Bill giving counties Sh335 billion.
Uhuru's statement is expected to escalate the standoff between the national government and counties, with governors seeking redress at the Supreme Court.
