On July 26, 2019, Aston Villa announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz from Manchester City for a fee of approximately £15 million, marking their tenth summer signing.
Luiz, 21, initially joined Manchester City from Vasco da Gama in 2017 but never featured in a single fixture for the Premier League champions.
He spent the last two seasons on loan at Girona, making 46 appearances for the La Liga outfit.
According to BBC Sport reports, Luiz's request for a work permit at Manchester City was rejected in August 2018, and he rejoined Girona for the 2018/19 campaign.
"Douglas is an extremely talented young player with an outstanding pedigree who I am sure will fit nicely into our style and system of play," said Villa manager Dean Smith.
Luiz was voted as the Player of the Tournament at the Toulon tournament in June 2019 as Brazil's U21 team won the competition.
