On July 26, 2019, a Nairobi court arraigned a man accused of conning a Kenyan businessman out of Sh25.7 million in a fake gold scam.
The suspect, Jonathan Okoth Opande, allegedly obtained the cash from city businessman Samuel Olaleye by falsely claiming he could sell him 250 kilograms of gold.
Between January 19th and February 18th, 2019, Opande presented himself to Olaleye as a director of a gold-trading company at Lagos hotel in Nairobi.
Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot charged Opande with obtaining money under false pretenses and extortion.
