On July 25, 2019, the Kenyan government announced that it would extend the validity of old generation passports until March 2020.
The decision came after President Uhuru Kenyatta directed Cabinet secretaries for Foreign Affairs and Interior to facilitate the issuance of visas to Kenyans on the current passports.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta has today directed Cabinet secretaries for Foreign Affairs and Interior to work with Foreign Missions across the world to facilitate the issuance of visas to Kenyans on the current passports,” said Col. Cyrus Oguna, Government Spokesperson.
The extension was made to alleviate the pressure on Kenyans who were forced to spend long hours on the endless queues at Nyayo House in Nairobi to acquire the new e-passports.
Application for the new e-passports continues countrywide, with the government urging Kenyans to take advantage of the extension.
