On July 25, 2019, Nigerian journalist Kemi Olunloyo sparked anger on social media after citing security concerns as the reason why she would not attend the ongoing African Women in Media conference in Nairobi, Kenya.
Olunloyo tweeted that she would not be attending the conference due to a security threat as a result of the Al-Shabab bomb attack in the Mogadishu Mayor's office, which is over 1,000 kilometers away from Nairobi.
Her tweet drew the ire of Kenyans who said that she should know better than to tweet something like that given that she is African.
Journalist Waihiga Mwaura was among her top critics, tweeting: "Her bio reads and I'm not kidding, 'Great Investigative & Medical Journalist.' SMDH. So what do you investigate if Nairobi is a no-go zone for you? For the record, Mogadishu is over 1000km away from Nairobi. I can't deal right now. Signed Non-Kenyan Fans."
However, Olunloyo seemed unfazed by the backlash and urged Kenyans to bring it on, saying she is a Leo and they entered season the day before.
