On July 25, 2019, Tanzania and Kenya demonstrated their joint commitment to fighting cross-border crime at a high-powered meeting at the State House in Dar es Salaam.
President John Magufuli received over Sh2.3 billion in seized proceeds of crime, including 35kgs of gold worth Sh2 billion and Sh351 million in different currencies.
The gold was seized in 2018 at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport enroute to Dubai, and a suspect was arrested and charged with the offence, later handed to Tanzanian authorities.
Another Tanzanian, Mr Baraka Chaulo, was repatriated along with Sh351 million in stolen currencies during a 2004 robbery at the Mwanga NBC bank.
President Magufuli revealed that the deal to return the suspects and properties was reached when he hosted President Uhuru Kenyatta at his Chato home in Geita.
"I want to remind the public that you can't commit a crime in Kenya and come to hide in Tanzania or vice versa. You will be arrested," said Dr Magufuli.
During the event, President Magufuli phoned President Kenyatta, and the two leaders exchanged pleasantries and jokes, with President Kenyatta promising to buy maize from Tanzania as agreed during the Chato visit.
