Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o and Sister Risper Nyagoy Face Arrest Over Estate Dispute ¶
On July 25, 2019, a Kisumu court ordered the arrest of Governor Anyang' Nyong'o and his sister, Risper Nyagoy, for disobeying court orders in a disputed estate inheritance suit.
The two were found guilty of contempt of court after failing to comply with an order to include all the children belonging to their sisters as beneficiaries of their father's Sh200 million estate.
The estate includes 100 acres in Miwani and flats along Jogoo Road in Nairobi, as well as parcels in Manyatta, Tamu, Milimani estate, and East Rata in Seme subcounty, Kisumu.
Justice Tripsisa Cherere ordered the duo to pay a total fine of Sh800,000, with each of them paying Sh400,000 within 30 days or serving one month in default.
However, the two failed to appear in court and pay the fine, leading to a warrant of arrest being issued against them.
The court also ordered them to pay a fine of Sh50,000 per month if they fail to file books of accounts as directed earlier.
The dispute began last year in October, when Justice Cherere ordered Nyong'o and Nyagoy to include all the children belonging to their sisters as beneficiaries of their father's estate.
The nephews, Kenneth Odhiambo and Geoffrey Omondi, sued the governor and his sister for leaving out some of their relatives from the list of beneficiaries.
The nephews said they were entitled to inheritance because they grew up under the care of the patriarch.
Justice Cherere also revoked the administrative letters and certificate of confirmation of grant that placed Nyong'o and Nyagoy as the controllers of the estate, and appointed one of the nephews as a co-administrator.
