On Monday, two police officers from Kamukunji Police Station arrested the driver of former Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich from the Treasury Building, informing him that he was under probe. The officers, who were not investigating the matter, demanded a bribe of Sh300,000 to release the driver, but he managed to raise Sh200,000 and was released.
However, the officers returned to the Treasury Building on Wednesday and arrested a friend of the driver who had gone there for a visit on allegations of forgery. The officers demanded a bribe of Sh100,000 before releasing the friend and later drove him to a structure near Kamukunji police station.
The driver, who had been in touch with the arrested man, led him to where he had been detained and was rescued by a police team from KICC police station. One of the corrupt police officers was arrested, while the second one escaped from the site.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and the DCI urges members of the public to always insist on being shown the Certificate of Appointment whenever anyone purports to be a DCI officer.
Former Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich and Principal Secretary Kamau Thugge were released on Tuesday night after posting their cash bail, alongside Ministry of East African Community Principal Secretary Susan Jemtai Koech and National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) boss Geoffrey Wahungu.
Rotich and Thugge had earlier appeared before a Nairobi court where they were released on a bond of Sh50 million with one surety of a similar amount or Sh15 million cash bail after being charged over the multi-billion Arror and Kimwarer dams scandal.
